Dr. Richard C. Smith
M.D., FACOG

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha. He then completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. He later become board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and was transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Regional Medical Center in Illinois. He completed an eight year tour of duty in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Thereafter, Dr. Smith established his private practice in Barrington & Crystal Lake, and then later added the Algonquin office. Then, in 1986, Barrington Health Care for Women, Ltd. was formed. Dr. Smith & his wife Barbara founded the Future Physicians program at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, which is a program for high school juniors considering a career in medicine.


Dr. Heather Herbolsheimer
D.O., FACOG

Dr. Herbolsheimer was raised in Michigan and received her undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University. She then graduated with a Master of Science degree from The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. While there, she studied the transformation of healthy cervical and breast cells into cancerous cells under the guidance of renowned scientist, Benita Katzenellenbogen. Dr. Herbolsheimer then moved to the Chicago area to attend medical school at Midwestern University. She then completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Herbolsheimer then served four years of active duty with the United States Air Force, during which time she became board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology. She was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in S. Carolina and Andrews Air Force Base, home of Air Force One. She received multiple service medals and was honorably discharged at the rank of Major. Dr. Herbolsheimer then returned to the Chicago area and joined Barrington Health Care for Women.


Dr. Samreen Akbar
M.D.

Dr. Samreen Akbar received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1994, followed by one year of internships in Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. After graduating medical school, she finished extensive residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Dow Medical College – one of the best medical schools in Pakistan. In 2000 she became Member and Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, affiliated with the Royal College of England. For her achievement, Dr. Akbar was recognized with the 2002 AOCOG Young Gynecological Award at the XVIII Asia & Oceania Congress of Obstetrics & Gynecology. After completing her fellowship, she joined the prestigious Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan as OB/GYN Attending/Consultant.

In 2002 after 13 years of passionate work in Pakistan, Dr. Akbar moved to the United States. In 2005 she completed her medical certifications and was accepted for her second residency at Cook County Hospital.

At Cook County Hospital, Dr. Akbar was highly respected by her seniors for her abilities and clinical approach; she was recognized with Best Teacher for medical students and residents as well as with Outstanding Resident and Outstanding Researcher. During her senior year, Dr. Akbar was promoted as Chief Resident. In 2009, she graduated from Cook County Hospital with distinctions.

In July 2009, Dr. Samreen Akbar joined Barrington Health Care for Women – bringing with her a great deal of experience, expertise, and patient care.

Dr. Samreen lives in Lake Barrington Shores with her husband, Akbar, who is an electrical engineer and a certified high school math teacher, and her two children – daughter Anosh and son Faisal. Her hobbies include playing video games with her kids and visiting serene places with her family.


Dr. Recia L. Frenn
M.D., M.A.

Dr. Recia Frenn grew up in Wisconsin and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She received her Master of Arts in Bioethics as well as her Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Frenn then moved to Burlington, Vermont, where she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Vermont.

During residency, Dr. Frenn was the chief resident and received several teaching and laparoscopic surgery awards, held leadership positions with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and researched smoking cessation during pregnancy.

Dr. Frenn lives in Barrington with her husband Matt and enjoys reading, traveling, crafts, and spending time with her family. Her medical interests include minimally invasive surgery and robotics, infertility, contraception, and high and low-risk obstetrics. She is committed to providing individualized and exceptional care for all women by helping them make informed health decisions based on their own personal values.
